France: 1001 Sights: An Archaeological and Historical Guide
Published in Paperback by University of Calgary Press (March, 2002)
Authors: James M. Anderson and M. Sheridan Lea
Average review score:

A Valuable Travelling Companion
France,1001 Sights (Anderson & Lea, 2002, University of Calgary Press) will enrich your perspective on the country, its people and the evolution of their society. It provides detailed information about remnants of human activity in France from the dawn of man in Europe (about 900,000 B.C.) through the first millennium A.D . This window provides a glimpse of paleo-, meso- and neolithic civilizations through the Iron and Bronze ages as well as the Celtic, Roman, Gallo-Roman, Merovingian, Carolingian and Viking periods of the country's evolution. This interesting and compact book complements what is available in other tour books, which focus primarily on the heritage of late Medieval and Renaissance France, by providing an ancient historical background for those later periods. In addition, although existing books make reference to the most spectacular of the remnants of early civilizations in France (e.g., Carnac, Lascaux or Nimes), this book features not only those well-known sites but also many, many others of exceptional quality throughout the country.

Anderson and Lea begin with an efficient overview of human habitation, invasion, conquest and assimilation in France, with pertinent commentary on language, religion and governance as they influenced the country's architecture, roads, commerce and organization. This sets the stage for the detailed chapters that follow on historical and archeological sites across the country in which hundreds of individual sights -- dolmens, menhirs, bridges, aqueducts, baths, villas, forts, etc. -- are described.

The book is organized by regions, a presentation that fits well with the regional historical perspective provided at the outset. Then, within each region, sites are located within current French Departments and relative to major cities. Finally, each site is described thoroughly in terms of the sights it contains, their historical significance, and how to find them. Directions are explicit in terms of route numbers, compass points, landmarks, distances from local centers and relative difficulty of access roads and paths (e.g., where pavement may be lacking or some walking/hiking is required to reach a sight).

In addition to the historical context provided to enhance the reader's appreciation of each sight, other strengths of the book include a glossary for archeological and architectural terms that may not be readily familiar, numerous black-and-white and color photographs of many spectacular sights, a bibliography of useful resources and a list of additional sights beyond those featured, for those who cannot get enough of these historical treasures.

This book will enhance forever the way one looks at France and appreciates the ancient relics of its countryside and cities, its regional differences and the formative millennia of its history, which was influenced by so many cultural forces. Enjoy this guide before as well as during your travels in France, to make the most of your time there. And even if you cannot travel there, use this book to complement other historical accounts of French civilization from the dawn of early man through the influence of the Celts, the Romans, the Germanic tribes and the Vikings (among others). It is a fascinating history that the stones tell, and Anderson and Lea have translated it well.

Great companion to the Freedom From Addiction book
This is not just another "how to" book. This book points the reader to Jesus Christ as life. Jesus Christ as our hope and freedom. This is written from Mike and Julia's perspective of their life and journey to freedom together.

The Title says it ALL ! Hallelujah!
I am free from addiction! This book explains in great detail how the POWER alluded to in the 12 steps ONLY comes from Jesus , and once you accept His most graceful redemption, there is NO need to call yourself addicted anymore! Please get out of the SIN (sitting in negativity) and rejoice in His holy name. I've studied and read, '2 Tracks One Goal', Dick B 'Akron Genesis of AA'., 'The Good Book and the Big Book'.... NO other book spells out how to get free FROM addiction! Not information ABOUT addiction, not a man-made 'design' for living, not a program to modify behavior... a TRANSLATION into a new being. (II Cor 5:17) and (1 Sam 10:6). This masterpiece shows all Bible references to the "program"... whence the essence. If you are serious about recovery, this is the best book (besides the Word of God) I've read! Thank you authors for your obedience to His Word. My fellow recoveries.... I pray you will pick this up and open your heart to God's Words. I understand why they now have a workbook based upon this book! It is a lifelong mission to fully apply the precepts explained in this book into one's life. Hallelujah! Praise and Glory to God!

The best study Bible for new believers
This study Bible is the best I've found for new and older believers. It helps establish believers in the Exchanged Life (Grace). If you don't understand the Father's Love and Grace you will struggle in your Christian life with sin and habits. And you will live under law (Don't do this, don't do that mentality). It's the way unto holiness.

Great Primer
If you are looking for a very basic, non-technical introduction to the oil and gas industry, this is it. It covers history, politics, chemistry and mechanics all in one book. Although I would like to know more about the chemical compositions, however this is a great book for general aspects of the industry.

Gamearth
Published in Paperback by New American Library (March, 1989)
Author: Kevin J. Anderson

For anyone that likes role playing games OR is a writer!
This book is one of those few that really captures the imagination, and one of my favorites from the age of 14 through college. There are two ongoing scenes, one with the "real world" people playing a medieval role-playing-game, and the other focuses on what goes on with their characters in Gamearth... When one of the real-life gameplayers decides to destroy Gamearth, the characters have to act independently to escape the game-world and come into the real one, proving that their land is alive and more than just figments of the players' imaginations. You get to see both the side of the real-world reacting to the characters refusing to do what they are told AND the characters' points of view as a roll of the die brings chaos to their land. Perfect for anyone trying to write stories or playing RPGs, as it brings into question the idea that our "imaginary" world might be more than something we just dream up that goes away when we close the book or stop the game!

Puzzles for Kids
I highly recommend this book! I am a 6th grade teacher in Clayton County. My students really enjoy working on these puzzles. The level of difficulty varies with the different puzzles allowing me to meet the needs of all my students, despite their varied ability levels. These puzzles are a great way to entertain and encourage students of different ages and ability levels.
